The residency
10 rooms are set up as an Artist Residency program, designed to host active artists visiting Berlin. The live/work rooms are the core elements of this effort. The Residency arised from
takt kunstprojektraum; a non-profit, artist-run effort, founded in 2003.
The main goal of the residency program is to provide artists visiting Berlin quick access to an environment that will foster their creative energies. Participating artists are invited and expected to explore their creative paths. These residencies are offered as an opportunity, but it is up to the artist to make full use of it. We do our best to assist and support, but each artist is responsible for their own activities. The residency program functions in conjunction with the art gallery/project space located in the same neighborhood, and artists from the residency program have opportunities to exhibit or host events in the gallery space.
Community living
The takt residency has a strong element of community living, and may be different from other residency programs you are familiar with. It merges a community living environment with creative artistic exploration. The rooms are all on the same floor, on either side of an L-shaped hallway. There are two kitchens and two bathrooms, which are shared by all those in the space.
The people attending the residency comprise a community of international artists, meeting in the space for a limited period. Each has their own room to live and work in, but share the use and maintenance of the common areas. We organize a series of meetings during each month, at which people can present their work and exchange ideas. The goals are to create a platform for dynamic exchange, to allow the possibility for spontaneous collaborations, and to build up networks among artists.
Finances
The program exists without any external funding. The fees paid by the artists are used to keep the project running. This also means that we have only a small staff working on volunteer basis. We are two artists that run the residency.
The building
The residency is on the first floor (one floor up from street level) of a historic building in the former eastern portion of Berlin. The space was empty for several years before we signed a lease in August 2007. The residency program replaces the former bureaucratic functions of the space with the dynamics of creativity and international exchange.
A bar/beer garden is located below the residency. This is a great place to meet and talk, as it is so conveniently located.
The neighborhood
The rooms are located in the East-Berlin neighborhood of Friedrichshain. The address is Grünberger Str. 1. The neighborhood offers many café's, restaurants, bars and shops. There is easy access to public transportation, and one can quickly get to other parts of the city. There are many artists living in the neighborhood and most people speak English as well as German. There are two of us that run the Residency program, Anje Görner and Bernd Haas. We can serve as resources to find materials.
