My Faiytale Life

My art continually explores the broad theme of complexity, more specifically the compexity of human emotions. My series of drawings, which are cut out and then reassembled to create three-dimensional scenes, broadly come under the theme 'My Fairytale Life'. These scenes are basically a visual diary of my own experiences and as such events that occur around me and to me provide constant inspiration. Each piece was triggered by happenings and the emotions triggered at the time of construction. Every paper scene is but one small part of a broader narrative – however, without the benefit of a concrete beginning or end to the story as clarification.
I like the idea that I can capture and put on display what are essentially invisible and fleeting things – thoughts, dreams and emotions – allowing them to be examined and considered at length. As in fairy stories, there are places to be explored, fears to overcome and personal demons to battle. An illustratory style has been used; thus adult issues are reduced down to their bare bones, represented in a child-like manner reinforcing the illusion that the complexity of adult life can in some way be simplified.
I use paper for a number of reasons, but mainly due to the fact that it is a vastly versatile material which can be transformed in so many ways. I like the transformational nature of it, where a flat block of paper sheets can be manipulated and turned into something magical.
Whereas in earlier paintings I depicted complexity more literally through use of layers of pattern and form, now I have gradually pared down the colour palette and shapes to black, grey and white with flashes of colour, so that while the emotions or situations depcited might be complex they are presented in a cleaner, bolder way.

Symbiotic Output

The effects of space and time create a sense of urgency in the mind. The places in which we belong, and what happens when we are not there, call into question how we react and converse with the environments we create. The evidence of this relationship is subject not only to physical deterioration, but also the limits of memory. Our attempts to create responses to our surroundings are finite, as we can only speak through impermanent means. This relationship flourishes despite its inherent short fallings. Connections are made. We harvest records of our atmospheres in an effort to present an indexical image of ourselves and of our lives. The exploration of this bond is exhibited in Symbiotic Output.

Fluids and Organisms

Emotions, sensations and thoughts seem intangible in nature although we know they are manifestations of physical processes and they occur through fluids' movements and modifications. The circulation of the fluids, at the macroscopic and at the microscopic levels, is taking place through both time and space, relentlessly evolving through our biological system of connections. The complexity and impurity of the human body allow each of us to experience and be aware of complex and sometimes contradictory feelings.
My work is focused on the connections between the spiritual and the material, the mind and the body, the paint and its uses to express sensations. The idea of portraying inner worlds drives my painting processes, and I search for visual translations of emotions and sensations.
The colorful and painterly biomorphic shapes of my paintings evoke the organization of bodily organic systems as well as tensions between opposite or discordant feelings. The fluidity and malleability of paint is explored as a potential embodiment of the intangible. But like the human body, painting remains impure and the act of painting is a permanent and endless exploration.
