You don’t know me, but....
My paintings are perhaps best described as ‘Narrative expressionism’ or ‘internalized portraiture’. The juxtaposition of a static figure (often possessing the head of either a fish or a bird) in an active setting hints at the internal, through the depiction of the external.

The stories behind these ‘Therianthropic’ pieces are deliberately ambiguous. The incongruity yet immediacy of the imagery fuel the viewer’s preconceptions. They invite the witness to create their own narrative and bring to mind facets or emotions that maybe more difficult to confront if not disguised behind a mask.

The images presented here are fragments that have arisen since arriving in Berlin.

Eileen Cubbage and Jay Shinn are American artists participating in the Takt International Residency Program in Berlin. Their new works make novel use of traditional themes and materials as a sublime aesthetic pervades both bodies of works on paper. Psychological and metaphysical space is explored with rigor and sensitivity as both artists develop their own specific language to investigate the perplexities of essential form and substance. Both artists subvert the perfect form, allowing elements of surprise to decreate the known.

Cubbage juxtaposes fields of meticulous silverpoint drawing with geometric swatches of matte acrylic paint on mylar. Taking small cues from poetry, philosophy, history, biology, her drawings evolve into playful riffs of shifts in form and stand as metaphor for decoding subtleties of social relationships. The core of the work lies in its ambiguity— the depiction and deciphering of complex boundaries between similarity and difference, foreign and familiar, serious and absurd.

Shinn also investigates abstract boundaries—his seemingly simple forms achieve an optical reality of both the visible and invisible. His pairing of sparse symmetrical geometric forms with the restricted materials of white spray paint and transparent paper creates apearances of illusions, depth, and shadow with an ethereal gravity. Shinn's luminous forms create a tenuous, inextricable balance between the physical world and the imagined.

Julia Theobalt currently uses painting, light and reflective materials to investigate the ideas around Hard Edge Abstraction with Pop Art, Minimalism and Installation practices.
Spatial elements and geometric forms are brought together in her different works to address the relationship between three and two-dimensional shapes. The resulting works seek negotiation between viewer, artwork and architectural space.
The paintings in Field Work are based on photographs of architecture and room structures throughout Berlin. The works stand alone .They are abstract paintings of lines, planes and color and investigate in the relationship between space and perspective.
Jiro Yoshihara said "the most important merits of Abstract Art lie in the fact that it has opened up the possibility to create a new, subjective shape of space."
With minimal interventions such as different color shades and a high gloss finish the idea of depth and substance are put into effect. They are squares with a mind of their own. Raw wood as a rough contrast to the lustrous finish give the works a life of its own. They are little windows and do not only display the subject matter, but also the reflection of the surrounding space.

PHOTOAUTOMATRAUM
This project is the creation of a fiction based on my (Filipa Guimaraes) life in Berlin. Photoautomat is the intermediate space between the place I live and the city. The space of my bedroom represents the white canvas from wheremy creations come from. There is a door on that canvas from where the ideas move to other places in the city.
Photoautomat is like a stage with a curtain that opens itself to the city and from there comes out the Zauberin (Magician), the Geist (Ghost) and the Bohemien (Bohemian), the three personifications of the character of Berlin.
It is about a closed circuit of a dream divided between three places: the interior of my bedroom, the Photoautomat and the city.
The Ghost character has a Polaroid that reveals who is behind the video
camera: Romy Pocztaruk.
